DATA BEFORE DISPOSAL

Keep. Disconnect. Sanitize.

A reset is one step, not a universal guarantee. Prepare data-bearing devices according to their technology and the sensitivity of the information.

  1. Keep

    Back up records, files and photos that must remain accessible.

  2. Disconnect

    Sign out, remove SIM and memory cards, and disable tracking or activation locks.

  3. Sanitize

    Use manufacturer guidance for ordinary devices and a documented risk-based process for sensitive business media.

BATTERY AWARENESS

Damage changes the pickup conversation.

Swelling, leakage, heat and impact damage should be disclosed before collection so the item is not treated like ordinary equipment.

  1. Do not dismantle

    Keep the equipment intact and do not puncture, crush, burn or heat it.

  2. Separate and disclose

    Keep damaged equipment away from heat and metal objects while awaiting specific handling guidance.

  3. Send a clear photo

    Show the damage in advance so pickup arrangements can be confirmed.

DIFFERENT NEXT LIVES

Reuse, refurbishment and recycling are not the same.

Useful equipment may have another working life. Non-reusable equipment can be separated so suitable material enters an appropriate recovery route.

  1. Reuse

    A working product continues in service with minimal intervention.

  2. Refurbishment

    Equipment is repaired or restored for further use by an appropriate operator.

  3. Recycling

    Non-reusable equipment is processed so eligible materials can be recovered.

INDIA'S FORMAL SYSTEM

Collection is the first role in a longer chain.

India's E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 define distinct responsibilities for producers, manufacturers, refurbishers and registered recyclers through an EPR framework.

  1. Defined roles

    Collection, refurbishment, production responsibilities and recycling are not interchangeable claims.

  2. EPR framework

    Producers meet obligations using certificates generated by registered recyclers through the CPCB system.

  3. Destination matters

    A responsible pickup conversation should also consider where equipment moves next.
